A biker t-shirt should fit like it belongs on a motorcycle: snug enough across the shoulders that it does not balloon at 70 mph, loose enough through the chest and gut that you can twist around to check your blind spot, and long enough that your lower back stays covered when you are hunched over the bars. If you ride, buy your true size in a heavyweight preshrunk cotton tee, wash it cold, and skip the high heat in the dryer. That is the short answer. The long answer, including why the "riding cut" is different from a gym fit, how much a preshrunk shirt really shrinks, and how to keep a back print looking sharp after 100 washes, is below.
Why does fit matter more on a motorcycle than off it?
Off the bike, a t-shirt just has to look good standing up. On the bike, it has to survive wind, sun, a vest or jacket over it, and hours of sitting with your arms stretched forward. That changes everything.
A shirt that is too big flaps. At highway speed the extra fabric turns into a sail, snapping against your ribs and creeping up your back until there is a six inch gap between your belt and your hem. A shirt that is too tight pulls across the shoulders when you reach for the grips, rides up even faster, and turns every long day into a wrestling match with your own collar. Neither one is a good time.
The riding cut, which is what Skull Society builds every tee around, splits the difference. Think classic straight-body fit, not slim, not boxy. Room in the shoulders, clean through the sleeves, and enough length to stay tucked into your posture instead of your waistband.
How should a biker t-shirt fit at each point?
Here is the checklist we use when a rider asks if they got the right size. Stand up, put your arms out like you are holding handlebars, and check each spot.
| Fit point | What you want | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulder seam | Sits right at the edge of the shoulder bone | Seam drops onto the upper arm (too big) or pulls toward the neck (too small) |
| Chest | 1 to 2 inches of ease, no pulling at the buttons of a vest over it | Horizontal stretch lines across a back print |
| Sleeves | End mid bicep, snug but not sausage tight | Sleeves hit the elbow or flap in the wind |
| Length | Covers the belt by 2 to 3 inches standing, still covers your lower back seated | Hem lifts above the belt when you lean forward |
| Collar | Lies flat, no gap, no choke | Bacon neck (wavy collar) after the first wash |
The single most common mistake is sizing up "for comfort." It feels roomy in the mirror and then rides like a parachute. If you are between sizes and you mostly wear the shirt on the bike, take the smaller one. If you mostly wear it under a heavy leather jacket in cold weather, take the larger one so it does not bunch.

Shop this teeHow much does a preshrunk cotton t-shirt actually shrink?
Preshrunk does not mean unshrinkable. It means the fabric was already run through a shrinking process at the mill, so most of the shrinkage is gone before the shirt is ever sewn. In practice, a heavyweight preshrunk cotton tee like the ones we print on will still tighten up a touch, usually in length more than width, if you throw it in a hot dryer every week. Most riders will not notice it. If you dry on high heat every time for a year, you will.
The fix is boring but it works: wash cold, tumble dry low or hang dry, and pull the shirt into shape while it is still damp. Do that and your size large stays a size large.
Our hoodies are a different animal. They are printed on a 50/50 poly-cotton blend, which is more stable than pure cotton and barely moves in the wash. The tradeoff is that poly blends hold heat, which is exactly what you want in October and exactly what you do not want in July.
Which shirt fabric is best for riding?
Every Skull Society t-shirt and long sleeve is printed on 100% preshrunk Ultra Cotton. That is a deliberate choice, and here is why it beats the thin fashion tees and the tri-blends for life on two wheels.
- It has weight. Heavier cotton does not flap as much in the wind, does not go see-through in the sun, and does not get chewed up by a vest zipper the way a paper-thin blend does.
- It breathes. Cotton pulls sweat off your skin better than most polyester, which matters when you are sitting on a V-twin in August traffic.
- It takes ink well. A big back print looks crisp and stays crisp on a dense cotton surface. Thin blends let the ink crack and fade faster.
- It ages right. A good cotton tee gets softer and better with every wash. It should look like it has ridden 10,000 miles because it has.

Shop this teeHow do you keep a back print from cracking and fading?
A screen printed design is ink sitting on top of the fibers, and the dryer is its natural enemy. Heat makes the ink brittle, the tumble action cracks it, and the cracks let the color fade out. You can double the life of a print by doing five things.
- Turn it inside out. Every wash. This keeps the print from rubbing against zippers, buttons and other shirts.
- Wash cold. Hot water loosens ink and speeds up fading on black cotton.
- Skip the bleach and the fabric softener. Bleach eats black dye. Softener leaves a coating that makes prints flake.
- Dry low or hang it. If you must use the dryer, use the low setting and pull the shirt out while it is slightly damp.
- Never iron the print. If you have to iron, do it inside out and keep the iron off the design entirely.
Follow that list and a black tee with a big skull on the back will still look black with a big skull on the back three summers from now.
Long sleeve, tee, or hoodie: which one for which ride?
Most of our designs come in all three, and riders ask which to grab. The honest answer depends on the temperature and what you wear over it.
The short sleeve tee is the everyday choice from late spring through early fall, and it is the one you want under a leather vest because there is nothing bunching at the elbows. The long sleeve is the shoulder season shirt for cold mornings in September and October when you want one layer under the jacket that you can peel down to by noon. The hoodie is for the ride to the bar, the campsite at the rally, and the garage in January. It is not what you want under a fitted jacket at speed.
I Ride So I Don't Choke People
Available as a tee ($24.97), long sleeve ($29.97) or hoodie ($43.97), so you can match the shirt to the weather.
Shop this designDoes Skull Society run true to size?
Yes. Our men's tees are a classic adult fit, which means if you wear a large in a standard heavyweight cotton tee from any major brand, you wear a large here. Our ladies' v-necks and tanks are cut for women, so they run slimmer through the body and shorter in length than the men's shirts. Ladies who like a looser fit should go up one size. Men who want a slightly trimmer look can go down one size, but check the length first so your lower back stays covered on the bike.
Every shirt is printed in the USA, one at a time, on the same Ultra Cotton blanks we have used for years, so the fit does not change from one design to the next. Buy one, learn your size, and every future order fits the same.

Should I size up in a biker t-shirt?
Not by default. Buy your true size for riding. Only size up if you plan to wear it mostly under a thick winter jacket, or if you are buying a ladies' cut and prefer a looser fit.
Will a preshrunk cotton t-shirt shrink?
A little, mostly in length, and mostly if you dry it on high heat repeatedly. Wash cold and dry low and the shrinkage is small enough that you will not notice it.
How do I wash a black t-shirt so it does not fade?
Inside out, cold water, no bleach, no fabric softener, low heat or hang dry. That routine protects both the black dye and the printed design.
What is the best t-shirt to wear under a leather vest?
A heavyweight short sleeve cotton tee in your true size. It will not bunch under the vest, it breathes, and the weight keeps it from riding up when the wind hits your back.
Are Skull Society shirts printed in the USA?
Yes. Every t-shirt, long sleeve and hoodie is printed in the USA on 100% preshrunk Ultra Cotton (tees and long sleeves) or a 50/50 poly-cotton blend (hoodies).
Find your size. Keep it for years.
Heavyweight preshrunk cotton, bold back prints, and a riding cut that stays put at 70 mph. Every design printed in the USA.
