What Are Bikers Thankful For? 12 Things Every Rider Is Grateful For This Thanksgiving

If You Don't Ride, You Don't Know skeleton biker t-shirt for Thanksgiving

What are bikers thankful for? Short answer: the open road, the people who ride with us, the drivers who actually check their mirrors, a bike that starts on the first try, and every warm day we steal from late fall. Thanksgiving 2026 lands on Thursday, November 26, and while the rest of the family argues about the stuffing, every rider at the table is quietly grateful for a list of things non-riders will never understand. Here are the 12 big ones, a quick "gratitude scorecard" you can run on yourself, and a few shirts that say it better than you will after your third plate.

What are bikers most thankful for at Thanksgiving?

We polled exactly zero scientists and a whole lot of guys at the gas pump. Here is what came back, in no particular order of importance (okay, number one is in order).

  1. Making it home. Every ride that ends with the kickstand down in your own driveway is a win. Riders don't take that one lightly, and neither should anybody else at the table.
  2. The riding crew. The friends who show up at 7 a.m. with full tanks, wait for you at the stop sign, and never say a word about how you took that last corner.
  3. Drivers who look twice. To every driver who actually checked the blind spot this year: we see you, and we're thankful. To everyone else: put the phone down and pass the gravy.
  4. A bike that fires on the first crank. Especially in late November, when the battery has every excuse to quit on you.
  5. That one 60 degree day in November. Every rider knows it. The forecast pops up, you call in "sick," and the whole world smells like leaves and exhaust.
  6. A spouse or partner who gets it. The one who says "go ride" instead of "you're going out again?" deserves the biggest slice of pie.
  7. Heated grips. Whoever invented these deserves a holiday of their own.
  8. Good roads with zero gravel in the turns. Rare. Beautiful. Sacred.
  9. The mechanic who doesn't rip us off. If you've got one, bring them a plate of leftovers. Seriously.
  10. Diner pie at the halfway point. Thanksgiving is basically a rider's breakfast stop, stretched out over six hours.
  11. A garage, even a small one. Somewhere dry for the bike to sleep while you dream about spring.
  12. The wind. Cheaper than therapy, better than a nap, and the reason most of us are sane enough to sit through dinner with the in-laws.

How thankful a biker are you? Take the gratitude scorecard

Give yourself the points for every statement that's true. Be honest. Your riding buddies already know the answer.

Statement Points
You waved at every rider you passed this year, even the ones on sport bikes 2
You thanked your mechanic out loud (not just in your head) 2
You rode on at least one day in November 3
You've said "I'm just grateful I made it home" after a close call 3
Your partner has never once complained about the bike (be honest) 4
You plan to sneak out for a ride on Thanksgiving morning 5

0 to 5 points: You're thankful, you just don't show it. Classic biker. 6 to 12 points: Solid. You'd get the last drumstick. 13 to 19 points: You are the reason the riding community works. Pass the pie to this person first.

Can you go for a motorcycle ride on Thanksgiving Day?

Absolutely, and plenty of riders make it a tradition. A short morning ride before the turkey hits the table is the best appetite builder ever invented. A few tips to make it a good one:

  • Go early. Roads are often quieter on Thanksgiving morning before everyone starts driving to Grandma's. The afternoon and evening, plus the Wednesday before, are a different story, so plan around those.
  • Watch for cold pavement and wet leaves. Late November tires take longer to warm up, and leaf piles in the turns act like ice. Ease into the first few miles.
  • Layer up. A base layer, a warm mid layer, and a windproof outer shell. Your fingers will thank you more than your cousin ever will.
  • Keep it short and be back on time. Nothing kills Thanksgiving goodwill faster than walking in during dessert smelling like exhaust and wind chill.
  • Remember the people on the road. Lots of tired, distracted, overfed drivers are out there later in the day. Ride like nobody sees you, because a lot of them won't.

What should a biker wear to Thanksgiving dinner?

You've got two options. Option one: the collared shirt your mother-in-law bought you in 2014. Option two: a shirt that starts conversations, ends arguments, and lets everyone know where your heart is. We're a little biased, but here's the cheat sheet.

  • For the rider who has to explain himself every year: anything that says "If You Don't Ride, You Don't Know." Saves you a 20 minute speech.
  • For the grandpa at the head of the table: a "Real Grandpas Ride Motorcycles" tee or mug, so the grandkids know exactly who the cool one is.
  • For the free spirit who skipped the dress code: "Live Free Ride Free" covers it.
  • For the host who did all the cooking: whatever they want. Do the dishes.

How do you say thank you to the riders in your life?

Bikers aren't big on speeches. Gratitude in this crowd usually looks like a full tank you didn't ask for, a hand on the shoulder at the bike night, or a text that just says "ride Saturday?" If you want to go a step further this season:

  • Buy the first round (of coffee) at the next breakfast run.
  • Help a buddy winterize their bike instead of just giving advice from a lawn chair.
  • Join a holiday toy run and ride for a kid who needs it.
  • Call the rider you haven't heard from in a while. Some of the toughest folks you know are carrying more than they let on.
  • Remember the riders who aren't at the table this year. Raise a glass and say their names.

Biker Thanksgiving FAQ

When is Thanksgiving 2026?
Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. It's always the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

Is it safe to ride a motorcycle on Thanksgiving?
It can be, with the right timing and gear. Morning rides tend to be calmer, while the travel rush before and after the holiday brings more cars and more distracted drivers. Watch for cold tires, wet leaves, and early sunsets.

What's a good Thanksgiving gift for a biker?
Thanksgiving isn't a big gift holiday, but a funny biker t-shirt or mug makes a great host gift or early Christmas kickoff. Check out our gift ideas for bikers who have everything for more.

Why do bikers say they're thankful for the wind?
Because riding clears your head like nothing else. Plenty of riders call it their therapy, which is why we wrote a whole post on riding and mental health.

Are Skull Society shirts made in the USA?
Yes. Our biker tees are printed in the USA, designed by riders for riders.
