What Is the Harley-Davidson Sprint 440? Everything We Know About the 2027 Entry-Level Harley

If You Don't Ride, You Don't Know biker t-shirt from Skull Society

The Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 is a new entry-level cruiser planned for the 2027 lineup. It is built on the same air/oil-cooled 440cc single-cylinder platform as the Hero MotoCorp-made Harley-Davidson X440 sold in India, but reshaped into a low-slung cruiser with forward controls and swept-back bars. Harley has said it wants the Sprint priced under $10,000 in the US, and early development reportedly targeted around $6,000. Final specs, the exact US price, and the on-sale date are not confirmed yet. Translation: a "real" Harley you can buy for less than some riders spend on chrome, if Milwaukee pulls it off.

Below is everything we know right now about the Harley-Davidson Sprint 440, what is still rumor, and our honest take on whether a 440cc single deserves the bar-and-shield.

What is the Harley-Davidson Sprint 440?

The Sprint is the headliner of Harley's "Back to the Bricks" plan, the turnaround strategy CEO Artie Starrs laid out in May 2026. That plan leans on bringing back historic names, and the Sprint is one of them. A type-approval filing in Australia lists the bike as the "SP440," and reporting from Australian Motorcycle News ties it directly to the India-market X440 engine.

On October 9, 2026, new details surfaced showing a more traditional cruiser layout: teardrop tank, deeply scooped seat, a lower stance than the X440, wider handlebars, and forward-mounted pegs so you can actually stretch your legs. In other words, less "café roadster," more "mini Sportster."

Sprint 440 specs: what do we actually know?

Here is the cheat sheet. We separated what is reported from what is still expected, because the internet loves to turn a rumor into a spec sheet overnight.

Item What's reported Status
Engine 440cc air/oil-cooled single, 6-speed Platform confirmed via filings
Power X440 makes about 27 hp and 38 Nm (about 28 lb-ft); Sprint may get retuned for more low-end grunt Expected
Wheels 19-inch front, 16-inch rear Expected
Suspension Upside-down fork, twin rear shocks Expected
Brakes Discs front and rear, two-channel ABS Expected
Seat height Lower than the X440's 805mm (about 31.7 in) Expected
US price Under $10,000 target; early goal was about $6,000 Not final
Model year Part of the 2027 lineup Announced; on-sale date TBD

Full LED lighting and a digital or TFT dash are also anticipated, possibly with the X440's Bluetooth and navigation features. None of that is locked in until Harley publishes a spec sheet.

Why is it called the Sprint?

Because Harley has done this before. The original Harley-Davidson Sprint was a 1960s single-cylinder bike built by Aermacchi in Italy, back when Harley owned a stake in the Italian company and needed something smaller to fight the wave of lightweight imports. The old Sprint came in 250 and 350 flavors.

So the name is not random marketing. It is a callback to the last time Harley tried to win over new riders with a small, affordable single. History does not repeat, but it sure does put on the same jacket.

Is a 440cc Harley a "real" Harley?

Cue the comment section meltdown. Here is where we land:

  • Yes, it's a Harley in the sense that matters for the brand's future: it gets new people on two wheels and into a dealership. Every 30-year Road Glide owner started somewhere, and for a lot of them it was not a 114-cubic-inch V-twin.
  • No, it won't potato-potato. It's a single. It will sound like a single. If you need the lope, you still need a Big Twin.
  • It's built overseas by Hero MotoCorp in India. That will bug some purists. Then again, Harley has built bikes outside Milwaukee for decades, and the old Sprint was Italian.
  • The price is the whole point. If it really lands well under $10K, it could be the cheapest way into a new Harley in a generation.

Our take: a bike that turns a curious 25-year-old into a lifelong rider is good for everybody who rides, including the guy on the Ultra who's going to roast him at the gas station.

Who is the Sprint 440 actually for?

Based on the reported layout, the Sprint targets three groups:

  1. Brand-new riders who want the Harley look without 700 pounds of bike and a 1,800cc engine.
  2. Shorter riders and many women riders who have been asking for a genuinely low, light Harley for years. (A reader comment on one of the source articles asked for the specs in inches "especially for women," and they have a point.)
  3. Experienced riders who want a cheap, light second bike for city errands, short hops, or teaching a spouse or kid to ride.

Riders who need to cover 500 highway miles a day two-up with luggage should look elsewhere. That's what Touring bikes are for.

How does the Sprint fit with the rest of Harley's small bikes?

It gets a little crowded. Harley already sells the X350 and X500 in some markets, both made by Qianjiang in China with water-cooled engines. The Sprint uses the Hero-built, air/oil-cooled 440 instead, and it is styled as a cruiser rather than a roadster. Harley has also talked about bringing back the Sportster name for 2027. (We covered that rumor mill in Is the Harley Sportster 883 Coming Back?)

The likely picture: the Sprint as the doorway, a revived Sportster as the next step up, and the Big Twins waiting for the day you swear you "don't need a bigger bike." Spoiler: you will.

Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 FAQ

When will the Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 be released?

Harley has said the Sprint is part of its 2027 lineup. An exact US on-sale date has not been announced, and some reports suggest dealer arrival could stretch from 2027 into 2028.

How much will the Sprint 440 cost?

Harley's stated goal is a US price under $10,000. Early development reportedly aimed for about $6,000. The final MSRP has not been published.

How much horsepower does the Sprint 440 have?

The X440 that shares its engine makes about 27 hp and 38 Nm (roughly 28 lb-ft) of torque. The Sprint may be retuned for stronger low-speed response, so final numbers could differ slightly.

Where is the Sprint 440 made?

It is based on the X440 platform that Hero MotoCorp designs and manufactures for Harley-Davidson in India.

Is the Sprint 440 a good first motorcycle?

On paper, yes: light, low, modest power, and ABS expected. Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course first, and test-ride it once dealers have one before you sign anything.

The bottom line

The Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 is Milwaukee's boldest bet in years on new riders: a cheap, low, single-cylinder cruiser wearing a name from the 1960s. Purists will grumble. New riders will show up anyway. And a few years from now, a lot of them will be on Big Twins, wearing a Skull Society shirt, telling the next rookie that their first bike was "just a Sprint."
