Is the Harley Sportster 883 Coming Back? What We Know About the 2027 Sportster

Yes, the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 is coming back. Harley confirmed on May 5, 2026 that the air-cooled Sportster returns for the 2027 model year, powered by the 883cc Evolution V-twin, with a target price of around $10,000 and U.S.-market bikes built in York, Pennsylvania. It is the first time the classic air-cooled Sportster has been in the lineup since the platform was discontinued after 2022. Full specs and final pricing are expected later in 2026. Below is everything that is confirmed, what is still rumor, and why this matters to anyone who ever learned to wrench, ride or raise hell on an 883.

Is the Harley Sportster really coming back in 2027?

It is. New CEO Artie Starrs announced it as part of Harley's "Back to the Bricks" strategic plan, the company's new roadmap for getting back to what made the Motor Company great in the first place. His words: "This has been the most requested motorcycle from both our riders and our dealers, and we are bringing it back better than ever."

Translation from corporate to biker: the dealers have been begging, the riders have been grumbling at every bike night for four years, and somebody in Milwaukee finally listened. According to Starrs, the Sportster was the number one request from dealers in every market, from Kentucky to Germany to China.

What engine will the 2027 Sportster have?

The 883. Not the 1200 from the Forty-Eight, and not the liquid-cooled Revolution Max from the current Sportster S. Harley confirmed the returning bike uses the air-cooled 883cc Evolution V-twin, the same family of engine that powered the Iron 883 and the SuperLow.

The teaser image Harley showed reads like a love letter to the old bike: the 45-degree V-twin, visible pushrod tubes and that round air cleaner cover. It will need internal updates to pass modern emissions rules, but the look and the soul are clearly old school. Shaking at idle? We certainly hope so.

How much will the new Sportster 883 cost?

Harley is targeting around $10,000. For context, the last Iron 883 in 2022 carried an MSRP of $10,749. Holding the price roughly flat after several years of inflation is a big deal, and Harley says it has the build cost where it needs to be to hit that number. Final MSRP has not been announced yet, so treat $10,000 as a target, not a sticker.

Old Sportster vs. new Sportster: what do we actually know?

Here is the scorecard, split between what Harley has confirmed and what is still up in the air.

Detail 2022 Iron 883 (last of the old guard) 2027 Sportster (announced)
Engine Air-cooled 883cc Evolution V-twin Air-cooled 883cc Evolution V-twin (confirmed), updated for emissions

Model year 2022 (final year) 2027

Why did Harley kill the Sportster in the first place?

The air-cooled Sportster ran for decades, but tightening emissions rules, especially in Europe, made the old Evo harder and more expensive to keep compliant. Harley moved the Sportster name to the liquid-cooled Revolution Max platform with the Sportster S and later the Nightster. Good bikes, fast bikes. But they were not the bike your buddy bought used, chopped into a bobber in his garage and rode to every bar within 200 miles.

That is the hole in the lineup the 2027 Sportster is meant to fill: affordable, simple, air-cooled and begging to be customized. Starrs specifically pointed to the Sportster's attainable price, strong resale value and its role as a blank canvas for parts and accessories.

What about the Sportster S and the new Harley Sprint?

The Revolution Max-powered Sportster S has carried the Sportster name since the Evo bike was shelved, and Harley has not said what happens to it. The Back to the Bricks plan does list Revolution Max models continuing for 2027 and 2028, so stay tuned.

The other headline is the Sprint, Harley's new entry-level bike. It was originally pitched in 2025 at around $6,000. Under the new plan, the target is now "under $10,000," and the teaser confirms it is not a V-twin. Harley has only said the engine is oil-cooled. Expect the Sprint to sit below the Sportster as the gateway bike, with the 883 as the step up for riders who want real Harley thump.

Should you buy a used Sportster now or wait for the 2027?

Here is the honest take, no dealer smile included:

  • Buy used now if you want to ride this season, love the 1200 (which is not coming back), or want a proven bike with a huge aftermarket. Used Evo Sportsters are everywhere. Just run through our used Harley checklist before you hand over cash.
  • Wait for 2027 if you want a warranty, modern touches (the teaser suggests an updated instrument pod), and a new bike close to the old price.
  • Watch used prices either way. A new 883 around $10,000 could put pressure on what sellers ask for clean late-model Iron 883s.

Is the Sportster comeback good news for riders?

We think so, and here is why. For years, the cheapest way into a new air-cooled Harley disappeared, and a whole generation of riders who would have started on an 883 started somewhere else. A simple, fixable, customizable bike near $10,000 brings back the classic Harley on-ramp. It is the bike people learn to wrench on, the bike that gets passed to a son or daughter, and the bike that ends up wearing a dozen different looks over its life.

Is it perfect? Probably not. The comment sections are already yelling about the missing 1200, and plenty of riders are wishing out loud for a sixth gear. But "Harley listened to riders" is a headline we have not typed in a while, and we will take it.
